Rye Lane, Peckham

We loved the recent film Rye Lane set in Brixton and Peckham and being South Londoners, we couldn’t help but spot many locations we knew and some we didn’t. We decided to put them on a map and make a walking route to include as many film locations as possible. The route takes in many of the places where the main characters hang out – including Il Giardino  restaurant and Peckham Soul.

Please note: The Tate Modern and Millennium Bridge are not included on this walk as they are a bit far to get to on foot – take the bus!

If you spot a film location that isn’t on our list please let us know

OS Route  WALKING POST Rye Lane Locations
Difficulty Easy
Length 4 miles (6.4km)
Average time 2 hours
Total ascent Pretty flat!

The walk starts in the peaceful walled garden in Brockwell Park (what3words///socket.doll.rank). After taking in the wide views of the city, the route descends down through the heart of Brixton to Windrush Square, the Ritzy, and Brixton Village Market. It’s easy to get disoriented in the covered market, so to continue the walk, turn off Atlantic Road onto Popes Road and after the two railway bridges, turn right on Brixton Station Road to follow the railway running all the way to Peckham, ending at Persepolis (what3words///bugs.juror.mime).

On the way, you pass through Wyck Gardens, Ebony Horse Club and Ruskin Park before crossing the railway at Denmark Hill Station. After some residential streets, you pass through Warwick Gardens and Holly Grove – both used in the film and then loop round Peckham to see most of the other locations.

Rye Lane is a 2023 British romantic comedy-drama film directed by and set in the South London areas of Peckham and Brixton, the film title comes from the real-life Rye Lane.

In South London, in a gender-neutral toilet at an art exhibition Yas encounters Dom. A few moments later, they meet again in the exhibition and walk through the Rye Lane Market together, bonding immediately over recent breakups.

They spend the day and evening together in Peckham and Brixton growing closer and pushing each other out of their comfort zones as they eat tacos, go to a karaoke night, and break into the house of Yas’s ex-boyfriend; causing a fallout and then a reconciliation by the Thames.
