What is the London to Brighton walk?

A Walking Post original, this long distance trail stretches 70 miles from Carshalton all the way to Brighton. On the way it climbs over the North Downs, passing lavender fields, vineyards & woodland, down to rural Sussex, before climbing up the chalky South Downs to descend to the sea.

Why we created this route

Last year Lucy created the North to South London Trail from Cockfosters in North London to Carshalton on the cusp of Surrey Hills. But, she thought, why stop there? Wouldn’t it be fun to continue the walk to the coast? Brighton was the obvious end destination, a popular resort with good transport links.

The aim was to access as much of the best rural countryside in Surrey and Sussex as possible and to avoid urban sprawl where feasible. It took time to work out how to get from A to B in manageable day sections and link to transport but now the route is complete and ready to share with the world!  Read more

North to South London Trail

Discover our original long distance trail through London, stretching 34 miles from Cockfosters at the northern end of the Piccadilly Line all the way to Carshalton in the south. It traverses the capital, connecting footpaths, waterways, woods and other green spaces – some well-known, some entirely surprising. If you want to, you could start in the centre of London and follow this route to meet the Brighton-bound trail at Carshalton or, if you’re game, walk all the way fom Cockfosters to Brighton!

Our plans for 2024

We plan to promote and walk the North to South London Trail in spring 2024 and the London to Brighton walk in the summer.

We would love to get the whole route (total 104 miles) recognised officially by  National Trails.
